What you could do with your new back yard

By Andrea Reynolds.

If your yard is big enough there are so many creative things you can do with it. The yard in the photo below came with a fence and gate, a 1.5 story heated shed, a perennial garden around the perimeter with railroad tie borders and a gravel patio. Based on this yard I thought of 21 projects I could have created in this back yard, which you could do with yours.

1. Put in an above-ground swimming pool (if permitted).

2. Put in a running track around the perimeter.

3. Grow your own vegetables and herbs and either sell them or dry them, freeze them, or can them.

4. Create a meditation garden with reflection pool. No more grass cutting.

5. Create a hedge maze for your own enjoyment and amusement.

6. Create a bird or butterfly sanctuary.

7. Plant a forest of Japanese Maple trees for shade to keep your home cool, and privacy.

8. Create a wildflower garden for beauty and no more grass cutting.

9. Create your own golf putting green or miniature golf.

10. Adopt a greyhound and let him run. Some dogs need a lot of exercise.

11. Pave the lawn with stone and have a great patio for entertaining.

12. Add a gazebo or pergola or awning for shade.

13. Build a children's playhouse or treehouse.

14. Grow an orchard of apple or peach trees.

15. Create a children's playground for your own kids or the neighbors’ kids.

16. Make an ice skating rink in the winter for the neighborhood kids.

17. Hold community-wide yard sales every weekend and make some extra money.

18. Fill the yard with sand for your own beach.

19. Build an enormous, multi-level deck.

20. Create a serene Japanese garden as your oasis from stress.

21. Create a labyrinth to walk from bricks or stones.
